The paper planner vs. electronic planner debate is one I’ve been having for several years. Now, I know the rest of the world has moved into the age of electronic everything. Address books, calendars, note pads… everything… either on a phone or tablet. There seems to be an app for everything. There is even an app to maintain your passwords.
Personally, I’ve been reluctant to switch to an electronic calendar. I prefer that it be right in front of me where I can see what’s going on at any moment. It’s the “feel” of it in my hands that I really like. I had the same issue going from a physical book to an e-book. Once I tried it though, it wasn’t as bad as I thought. And, the fact that I could have my choice of ALL my books in my hands at one time… well, that was very appealing.
My Planner Preferences
At work, I just have a coil bound monthly/weekly calendar that I use only for the full month pages. The weekly pages don’t get used at all. Unfortunately, I usually have an issue finding what I like. Pocket Planners are just too small. I prefer a journal size (5.5″ x 8″) or slightly larger (7″ x 9″). Those sizes are small enough to fit into my purse (which is not small), yet large enough to be useful. Generally, I buy one with one month per page, or spread over two pages and then tear out the weekly pages. I need a build-your-own customized planner. Recently, I was fortunate to have found a place to do exactly that.
I discovered a fabulous planner by Erin Condren. (#affiliate links. #disclosure) Fair warning: they’re a little pricey, but they are well worth it. I went to the website and started building their main item, the Life Planner. Shame on me for not investigating further from the get-go. As I was reviewing my order, I was complaining about the fact that I was getting stuck with weekly pages that I was never going to use. When I started looking at other options, I discovered they have a monthly planner that has the style of pages that I like.
There are two sizes to choose from, and all the other options available to their planners. You can choose from multiple covers and have it customized with your name, business, name…whatever. They have multiple coil colors to choose from, interior page divider choices, and tons of accessories you can include. There are productivity pages they can include for budgets, address books, meal planning, travel planning and health planning. Clearly, they have put some thought into what their target audience needs.
Deluxe Monthly Planner
So, I abandoned the Life Planner and built my Deluxe Monthly Planner. If you sign up for their newsletter you will get a 10% off discount code. They had a sale going when I ordered, so with that and the discount code, my planner was about $50. Like I said, a little pricey. If you’re going this route, I recommend you be very choosy and get exactly what you want in your planner. This is my finished planner. The verdict is: I LOVE it!! It is absolutely the perfect size! The front and back covers are in a heavy-duty laminate that is amazingly durable. I’ve been carrying this thing around in my purse for over a months and it’s not getting beat up at all.
I did customize mine a bit by printing monthly tabs from a post I found on Pinterest (check them out HERE). My planner is very colorful, so these tabs worked perfectly. I printed them on Avery full-sheet labels and cut them out. Super easy!
When ordering my planner, one of the options is how many blank note pages you want to be included. I opted to double mine. I made tabs for those too, splitting my 80 pages into four sections to be used for specific projects I have going on. The monthly calendar pages are plenty big enough to record my schedule and they leave tons of space for more things to be added as well.
I could not possibly be more thrilled with this planner. I’ve always been a bit of a stationery nerd, so when I find things like this planner, I get very giddy! So, if you’re like me, go to their site and drool…. then order your planner. You will not regret it! They are FABULOUS!
